The Perfect State by Al-Farabi is a philosophical work about the ideal political community and the qualities of wise leadership. Al-Farabi imagines a society governed by knowledge, virtue, justice, and a correct understanding of human purpose. He links political order with metaphysics, ethics, and the pursuit of ultimate happiness. The ruler of the perfect state must possess both intellectual excellence and moral integrity. The work also compares virtuous and corrupt forms of social organization. It is one of the most important texts in medieval Islamic political philosophy.
