The Sonnets by William Shakespeare is a sequence of poems about love, beauty, time, desire, jealousy, mortality, and poetic immortality. The poems address figures often known as the Fair Youth, the Dark Lady, and the Rival Poet. Shakespeare explores both idealized affection and troubled passion with remarkable psychological complexity. Many sonnets argue that poetry can preserve beauty and feeling against the destructive power of time. The sequence also examines betrayal, self-division, longing, and the instability of human emotion. It is one of the greatest achievements of English lyric poetry.
