Phaedo by Plato is a philosophical dialogue set on the final day of Socrates’ life. As Socrates prepares to drink the hemlock, he speaks with his followers about death, the soul, and the philosopher’s task. The dialogue presents arguments for the immortality of the soul and the idea that philosophy is a preparation for dying well. Plato also explores the relationship between the body, desire, reason, and true knowledge. The calmness of Socrates gives the work great emotional and moral force. Phaedo is one of Plato’s most important dialogues on metaphysics and the meaning of a philosophical life.
