Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë is a novel about an orphaned girl’s struggle for independence, dignity, love, and moral self-respect. Jane grows up under cruelty and hardship, first in her aunt’s house and then at Lowood School. As a governess at Thornfield Hall, she falls in love with the mysterious Edward Rochester, but their relationship is tested by secrets and ethical conflict. The novel combines romance, Gothic atmosphere, social criticism, and spiritual searching. Brontë gives Jane a powerful inner voice and presents her as a woman determined to be loved without surrendering her conscience. The book remains one of the great English novels of personal growth and emotional resilience.
