Al-Muqaddimah by Ibn Khaldun

Al-Muqaddimah by Ibn Khaldun is a major work of history, sociology, politics, economics, and philosophy. Ibn Khaldun introduces a method for understanding the rise and fall of civilizations through social, geographic, economic, and political causes. He gives special attention to group solidarity, leadership, labor, taxation, urban life, education, and the cycle of dynasties. The work criticizes unreliable historical reporting and argues that history must be studied with rational analysis. It presents society as governed by patterns that can be investigated rather than merely narrated. Al-Muqaddimah is often regarded as one of the most original works of premodern social thought.
