Flatland by Edwin Abbott Abbott is a satirical novella set in a two-dimensional world inhabited by geometric figures. The narrator, a square, describes the rigid social hierarchy and limited worldview of his flat universe. His encounter with a sphere from the third dimension forces him to question everything he believes about reality. Abbott uses mathematical fantasy to criticize social prejudice, intellectual narrowness, and Victorian class and gender assumptions. The story also invites readers to imagine dimensions beyond ordinary perception. Flatland remains both an entertaining work of speculative fiction and a clever philosophical allegory.
