Symposium by Plato is a philosophical dialogue about love, beauty, desire, and the ascent of the soul toward wisdom. The work is set at a banquet where several speakers offer different speeches in praise of love. Through Socrates and the teaching of Diotima, Plato presents love as a force that can lead the mind from physical attraction to the contemplation of eternal beauty. The dialogue explores both human relationships and metaphysical ideas about truth and perfection. It also shows Plato’s characteristic method of using conversation to examine complex questions. Symposium remains one of the most influential ancient works on love and philosophy.
